There’s a Feininger retrospective on right now at the MuseĆ© de Beaux Arts here in Montreal. I checked it out yesterday and it is so amazing. Go see it if you’re in town.
Reading about these Bauhaus guys has led me to Kandinsky’s treatise, Concerning the Spiritual in Art and the associated colour theories of Klee and Itten and Delaunay, which I think is starting to give me a stronger understanding of colour. Above is a little watercolour sketch I did inspired by these guys. You can read the Kandinsky book for free here. Warning: It will make you yearn for a time when people believed in things.
Kind of related: CS Neal has a great list of recommended books for illustrators and designers. I pretty much went straight to the library and put them on reserve.
I also just discovered this great illustration podcast, I think I’ve seen it on Drawn before but I quickly forgot about it. I’ve only listened to two episodes but they were fantastic and full of great practical advice.
Check out the interview with Christoph Neimann and the interview with John Cuneo.
If you have any other episodes to recommend to me (there are over 80) please let me know.
